Design as Dialogue is an essay written and designed by Sam Fosbinder and I. We researched and defined how graphic designers are and should be socially responsible for educating and engaging with communities around us. The essay focuses on how socially responsible designers are ethical in their approach to using their talent to address social, environmental, and economic concerns that benefit their community.
The essay was designed to look like a field guide of sorts, as though a designer or individual was taking notes and annotating the essay. The handwritten marginalia, highlighted text, tape and ripped paper all allude to this idea of interacting with and being present with design and your audience.
Design as Dialogue was published along with a collection of other student works in the Spring 2022 Design in History in Design publication at Columbia College Chicago.
